Your Vehicle

What vehicles do you cover?

We currently offer temporary insurance for the following vehicles:

  • Private Car
  • Commercial vehicle/van
  • Motorbikes

Please note, that there are some restrictions on the vehicles we can insure.

  • Private cars must be valued under £65,000
  • Commercial vehicles/vans must be valued under £65,000 and weigh no more than 7.5 tonnes.
  • Motorbikes must be valued under £10,000

We are also unable to insure any type of hire or rental vehicles.

What vehicles can’t you cover?

Unfortunately, there are certain types of vehicle and situations that we are unable to insure. These include the following:

  • If the vehicle has been modified in any way except for those designed to aid disabled drivers
  • Where the vehicle is left-hand drive unless it is a motorhome and caravanette
  • If you’re trying to recover an impounded vehicle unless you purchase our specific impounded insurance
  • Where the vehicle has more than 8 seats in total
  • Where the vehicle has been hired or rented and/or used as a taxi or home delivery
  • If you’re trying to insure a vehicle as a courier, unless unless you purchase our specific courier driver insurance
  • Where the vehicle is not registered in Great Britain, Northern Ireland or the Isle of Man

Can I get a quote for my motorhome / horsebox?

We can provide cover for Motorhomes weighing up to 7.5 tonnes. However, the motorhome must not be a hire or rental vehicle.

Please also be aware that whilst we can provide cover the vehicle must not have been modified in any way, have more than 5 seats, and must be right-hand drive only.

Can I use a Tempcover policy to insure my leased vehicle?

Currently, we can only look to insure vehicles on a temporary car insurance policy, where the lease is for 90 days or more. Insurance may be offered as long as you meet the insurers’ criteria.

What can I use my van for with a Tempcover policy?

With our van policies, it will depend on the usage you select, but as standard, you will be covered for social, domestic and pleasure use including to and from various places of work, and also for the carriage of your own goods in connection with your business. Please be aware, that there is no cover for any goods carried in or on the vehicle, so you’ll need to find a separate policy with another provider to cover those goods.

Types of work we can generally permit under our policies:

  • Tradesman/Tradeswoman
  • Office Worker
  • Courier
  • Dog Walker

Types of work we cannot permit under our policies:

  • Taxi use or commercial travelling of any kind
  • Hire & Reward
  • Use in connection with the motor trade
  • Use to carry hazardous or dangerous goods

Can I carry a pillion passenger?

We do not permit the carriage of a passenger with our motorbike policies.

Can I take my bike outside of the UK on holiday?

All of our motorbikes policies will cover you with the minimum level of cover required in the EU country you decide to visit. If you’re not sure what the minimum level of cover is where you’re going, you should be able to find that information online.

All we ask is that the vehicle is UK registered, and returns to the UK before your policy expires.

Can I use my bike for making deliveries?

Our motorbike policies do not permit the carriage of goods for payment, so if you’re being paid to deliver any goods on your motorbike, we can’t cover for that with our temporary policies.

Why can’t I get a quote?

If after submitting your application you have not been offered a quote by any of our insurers this may be due to a combination of factors such as your age, the duration that you’ve held your licence and the vehicle you’re looking to insure. It may be that one or all of these factors do not meet our insurers acceptance criteria and unfortunately, we cannot change the outcome of this for you. Do pop back again in the future; we constantly review our acceptance criteria and work hard with our insurers to provide quotes for our customers.

Can I have more than one driver?

Currently our policies only permit 1 driver per policy. Whilst we may offer this feature in the future, currently if you require 2 drivers – you will need two separate applications/policies to cover two people on the same vehicle.

Don’t worry, the policies don’t interfere with each other, so this won’t cause any issues with the either policy.

Can I use Tempcover for work?

Tempcover policies cover social domestic and pleasure use and commuting to and from one place of work. If you need further cover, for example travelling to various places of work or class 1 business use – each insurer has a different level of cover, so you should check the Insurers Declaration after your quote has been generated to see if they offer suitable terms for you. It’s important to check the Insurers Declaration for any excluded occupations before purchasing to ensure that what you do for work is something we can support with our insurance, this will be displayed to you after a quote has been generated before payment stage.

Can I take out multiple policies?

Tempcover is designed for short term use, so we would not recommend using the service over a long period of time. However, if you need to insure your car for a few weeks at a time, you can purchase our insurance up to 28 days in advance, for a maximum of 7 days, and repeat purchase if necessary.

Can I tax my vehicle with a Tempcover policy?

Here at Tempcover we appreciate that when you’re trying to get a vehicle back on the road, you want it done with minimal fuss.

With our short term policies, we are given a 7 day window in which the details of a vehicle are uploaded to the MID. So if you’re looking to tax straight away after insuring with us, you may not be able to do it online but there is an alternative!

Most Post Offices’ will allow you to tax the vehicle with our insurance certificate, which you’ll receive straight after you’ve purchased online.

Give them a call before you head into town, and you should be all sorted in no time!

Do I need to be the vehicle owner?

The simple answer is no! As long as you have permission from the vehicle owner to take out insurance on their vehicle, there’s no requirement to own the vehicle in order to temporarily insure with us.

Please note; we cannot look to insure hire, rental, or short term lease vehicles – so unfortunately if the vehicle you want to drive falls into this category, we will be unable to provide valid insurance for you on this occasion.

Can I insure my SORN vehicle?

As long as your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition, and you either have tax or will tax the vehicle with our insurance certificate, we can allow insurance for this purpose. The vehicle must have a current MOT or you must have a pre-booked MOT appointment to attend whilst insured with us in order for the insurance to be valid.
