Do you have to pass your theory before driving lessons?

Why are theory tests so important?

One of the first questions many learner drivers may ask is: do you need to pass your theory test before taking driving lessons? It’s a good question and, if you’re preparing to get behind the wheel for the first time, the answer might help shape your plans.

In this handy guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about theory tests and driving lessons, and how they fit together. We’ll also share some insights to help you prepare for your theory so you’re full of confidence ahead of your test.

What are theory tests and why are they important?

The UK driving theory test is designed to assess your knowledge of the Highway Code. It will cover everything from understanding road signs and markings to safe driving practices. A theory test is a crucial step in the process of getting your driving licence and acts as the foundation for your knowledge as a new driver so you can navigate roads safely and responsibly.

The theory test is made up of two parts:

  • Multiple choice: This section of the test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions covering a wide range of topics, from road signage and markings to vehicle safety and hazard awareness. You’ll have 57 minutes to complete the test and you’ll need to answer 43 questions correctly to pass.
  • Hazard perception: This part of the test involves watching 14 short video clips of real-life driving scenarios and clicking when you see a developing hazard. This tests your ability to spot potential dangers you may encounter on the road, a skill that’s vital for driving safely.

Passing your theory test demonstrates that you have the necessary knowledge to understand the rules of the road and you’re able to anticipate potential hazards to keep you and other road users safe.

Do you have to pass your theory test before starting your driving lessons?

The short answer to this question is no; you don’t have to pass your theory before you can start taking driving lessons.

You can begin lessons once you have a provisional licence and you don’t need to have passed your theory test to get one. Many people may find it helpful to start learning to drive practically alongside studying for their theory test, however, as this means you can put what you have learnt in the Highway Code to practice on the road.

Can you drive with a provisional licence without passing your theory test?

Yes, you can. If you have a provisional licence, you can begin learning to drive before passing your theory test. Legally, you’ll need a provisional license before you can learn to drive. You can apply for your provisional licence online or through the post.

However, there are some restrictions that you must be aware of and adhere to:

  • Age: You must be over the age of 15 years and nine months to apply for a provisional licence and you can start driving a car once you are 17.
  • Supervision: You must always be accompanied by a qualified driver who is at least 21 years old and has held a full driving licence for at least three years when learning to drive with a provisional licence.
  • Learner plates: The car must display learner (L) plates clearly at the front and rear of the vehicle.
  • Road types: Legally you’re not allowed to drive on motorways with a provisional licence. This is only possible once you have passed your practical driving test.
  • Insurance: If you are learning to drive in a friend or family member’s car once you have your provisional licence, you must ensure you have a learner driver insurance policy in place to cover you for time spent behind the wheel.

Frequently asked questions

Why do some people want to pass their theory test beforehand?

While you can start driving lessons before passing your theory test, there are a few reasons why some learners prefer to get the theory out of the way first:

  • Building confidence: Passing your theory test before taking practical driving lessons can give you a boost of confidence. As you already have a solid understanding of the rules and regulations, you’re likely to feel more prepared and less anxious behind the wheel.
  • Better focus: Some learner drivers may find it easier to concentrate on mastering the practical driving skills once they’ve got to grips with the theoretical knowledge. This means you can fully focus on the road without the added pressure of studying for the theory test.
  • Time management: Getting your theory test out of the way ahead of starting driving lessons can give learners the freedom to solely dedicate their time and energy to getting behind the wheel to practice.
  • Ultimately, the decision of whether to take your theory before or after starting lessons comes down to personal preference. There is no right or wrong answer; it’s all about what works best for you and how you prefer to learn.

How can you prepare for your theory test?

Making sure you are well prepared before taking your theory is key to success. Below are some handy tips to help you ahead of your test:

  • Study the Highway Code: Make sure you familiarise yourself with the Highway Code by reading it thoroughly so that you understand the rules and regulations of the road.
  • Practice questions: Practising questions you may encounter in your theory test will ensure you feel more comfortable with the format and help you identify any areas where you need to improve your knowledge.
  • Mock tests: You can take mock theory exams online that simulate the real test environment.
  • Hazard perception videos: You’ll find a wealth of video clips online that can help you spot developing hazards on the road, in the same way you would see them in the test.
  • Make use of online resources: There are plenty of apps and websites that offer theory test preparation material, including practical tips, advice and practice questions.
  • Ask for advice: If you have any friends or family who have recently taken their theory test, you could always ask them for advice and test your knowledge with them.
