Last-minute half-term ideas for all the family

Half-term ideas with Tempcover’s micro adventures generator

Every time half term comes around, families face the same question: ‘What can we do to keep the kids entertained?’

Whether you’re heading away for a few days or staying at home and exploring local landmarks, we can help inspire your half-term adventure. Tempcover’s Micro Adventures generator offers an exciting range of ideas for half-term days out.

  • Recent Tempcover research of 1,000 parents with children aged between 5 and 11 found 98% struggle to find fun and engaging activities during school breaks.
  • As a result of this, 65% rely on screen time to keep the children occupied during these holidays.

With our generator, all you have to do is enter your postcode and a few key details about the kind of trip you’re interested in (fun, educational, indoors, outdoors or a combination of all) and we’ll share suggestions for unique family days out near you.

Family fun days out

From areas of natural beauty ripe for exploring and enjoying picnics to sites of historical significance and eye-opening museums, there’s something for everyone. Select establishments have been named a ‘Top Micro Adventure Location’, adorned with a sticker so you know you and the kids will be in for a good time.

Marc Pell, Managing Director for Tempcover said: “You don’t have to jet off abroad or stick to the same old soft play centres, parks and coffee shops this half term, instead, exploring nearby gems could lead to even greater family adventures.

“Our Micro Adventures generator is designed to be a valuable resource, helping parents uncover fresh and exciting activities just a short drive from their doorstep.”

Should I take a UK road trip or have days out this half-term?

Do you want to treat the kids to different experiences within driving distance or would you rather explore another area of the UK? There are a number of factors that will influence your decision this half-term, not least the price.

Are cheap family days out in the local area more appealing (and affordable) than exploring another area, or do you just need a change of scenery? Spending time in the countryside, beaches or attractions the UK has to offer can help you and your family make memories.

Day trips can be equally exciting, especially if you’re trying something you’ve never done before. There are a number of ways you can decide on the best route, with our Micro Adventures Generator offering instant inspiration.

What are the road trip essentials?

Now you’ve decided where you’re going, it’s time to think about how you’re getting there. There are a number of things you can do to make half-term drives safer and more special:

  • Plan your route in advance.
  • Find places to stop on the way there and the way back.
  • Plan the perfect playlist.
  • Load up on favourite snacks.
  • Decide the in-car games you’re going to play. Who doesn’t love I Spy after all?

You should also perform your regular car maintenance checks ahead of the journey. You would not want to break down, especially with bored children in tow.

Why not share the driving this half-term?

34% of those polled in our survey said they’d be more motivated to go on adventures if they could split the driving.

This is where temporary car insurance can help. Our temporary policies are fully comprehensive and flexible from one hour to 28 days, meaning you can cover yourself to drive another vehicle for as long as you need.

Get behind the wheel and share the driving if you’re on a family getaway or borrow a bigger car from friends or a family member to fit everything in. We know how much stuff kids like to take, even if it’s just for a day away!

Marc Pell, Tempcover’s Managing Director, continues: “A family road trip is the perfect way to escape the everyday routine and create memories that will last a lifetime. You don’t even need to own a car with temporary car insurance – you can borrow one for the day, or parents can also take turns driving to lighten the load.”

Banish boredom, make memories and share a special road trip with Tempcover this half-term.
