How does monthly car insurance work?

Monthly car insurance can be a cheaper option when looking for cover on a more flexible basis. For a lot of drivers, the long-term commitment of 12-month insurance is too much and doesn’t fit a number of situations we may find ourselves in.

When might I need monthly insurance?

There are many situations where cheap one-month car insurance could be the most cost-effective option. If you’re not driving every day or using that car long-term, it could be cheaper than paying for traditional annual insurance.

Here are just some of the times you might need a simple, straightforward monthly policy:

How much does car insurance for one month cost?

Even though monthly car insurance can be a cheaper alternative in many situations, the cost is dictated by the details of the policy. This means that the overall price will depend on several factors that are provided when getting a quote. This includes:

  • The car’s make and model – the more expensive your car is to repair or replace, the most costly it will be to insure.
  • The car’s age – Driving old cars can mean you miss out on important safety features and parts can be difficult and more expensive to find.
  • Vehicle modifications– Making modifications and adding car cosmetics can cause prices to rise as insurers are less likely to pay for parts and features that aren’t manufacturer-standard.
  • Your driving experience – As you’d expect, new drivers with less experience are more likely to have an accident, therefore insurers will increase prices for new and young drivers.
  • Driving licence type – If you’re learning to drive, you could find monthly learner insurance to help you practice, but you will have to pay more if you only have a provisional licence.
  • Where you live – The crime rates and traffic accident statistics of where you live and drive will increase or reduce the price of your policy. Safer areas will be cheaper than those with high crime and accident rates.

How do I get a cheaper deal on my monthly car insurance?

There are ways to reduce the cost of your policy and get a cheaper deal on your monthly car insurance. As with all insurance products, it’s important to be as honest and transparent as possible to ensure you’re providing the correct information. However, there are choices you can make to get the best deal possible. These include:

  • Choosing to insure a smaller, less powerful car in a lower insurance group
  • Selecting the right insurance for the duration you need
  • Opting for the highest level of cover (which you get as standard with Tempcover)
  • Only choosing the additional products you actually need
  • Tailoring the policy to suit your needs

You can see how much your one-month car insurance in the UK could cost using the price estimates below.

Monthly car insurance FAQs

What details do I need when buying one-month car insurance?

Finding the right one-month car insurance is quick with us, but you can further speed up the process by having the following details to hand:

  • Your car’s registration number
  • Your details (name, address, date of birth, etc.)
  • Your licence type and length you’ve held it
  • Your car’s value
  • Your email and phone number (to send the policy documents to)

Can I drive someone else's car with my monthly insurance?

There are three car insurance options that will let you drive someone else’s car. This includes the following:

  1. Becoming a named driver on the insurance policy of the person whose car you’re borrowing.
  2. Finding insurance that offers a Driving Other Cars (DOC) extension and specify that this is for situations other than emergency use only.
  3. Buying flexible temporary cover through us whenever you need to drive someone else’s car.

Driving without the correct insurance can result in hefty penalties including six points on your licence and a fixed fine of £300.

Can I extend my monthly car insurance policy?

You can arrange a new monthly policy to start the moment your current policy expires. This can be done at www.tempcover.com and you’ll receive a quote in under two minutes.

Will my monthly Tempcover car insurance policy cover travel to Europe?

Tempcover’s temporary car insurance provides third-party cover only when driving in the EU and several other European countries. Tempcover does not currently offer fully comprehensive EU cover. However, this will be full comprehensive cover when driving in the UK.

Can I get one-month car insurance for a hired or rented vehicle?

The majority of hire cars and rented vehicles will have their own insurance included as standard. You can, of course, decline this and get a quote and arrange your own temporary car insurance but this will depend on the dealership’s terms.

Can learner drivers get monthly insurance?

Yes, you can take out Tempcover’s temporary learner driver insurance for times ranging from 12 hours to 28 days. This short-term cover lets them practice in a friend or family member’s vehicle (while being supervised by a driver aged over 25 who’s held a driving licence for over three years) without affecting any no claims discount.
